Create assignments Instructor
Once students are enrolled in the Student tab, you can create assignments for them to submit to. DrillBit gives you full control over the assignment lifecycle — from the basics like name and deadline, to granular plagiarism settings, grading, questions, and database scope.
Steps to Create an Assignment
- Navigate to My Classes, then enter the class to see the Assignments and Student tabs.
- Click the + icon to open the assignment creation form. This opens a side-scroll window where you can enter the assignment details.
- Fill in the following fields:
- Assignment Name – a clear, descriptive name students can easily identify.
- Select Start Date – when the assignment becomes available to students.
- Select End Date – the deadline for submissions.
- Instructions – guidelines on how students should submit, required format, and any other relevant information.
13.1 Configuring Assignment Settings
Assignment Settings are optional and controlled by a toggle. When toggled to Yes, you can activate the following options:
13.1.1 Allow Assignment Grading
Toggle to Yes to reveal the Enter Max Assignment Marks field, where you specify the maximum marks for the assignment.
13.1.2 Exclude Reference / Bibliography
Toggle Yes to exclude references and bibliographic material from the plagiarism check so citations aren't flagged as non-original text.
13.1.3 Exclude Quotes
When Yes, quoted material is excluded from the plagiarism check — useful so properly cited quotes aren't mistakenly flagged.
13.1.4 Exclude Small Sources
Exclude matched sources under a specified word count. Minimum 1, standard 14, maximum 9,999.
13.1.5 Save to Repository
Saves the assignment to the global or institutional repository for future comparison. When Yes, two options appear:
- Repository Scope – choose Global or Institutional.
- Exclude Previous Submissions – previously submitted copies of the same document will not be included in the comparison.
13.1.6 Allow Resubmission
Toggle Yes to show an Enter No. of Resubmissions field. This sets how many times a student can resubmit. No = only one submission allowed per student.
13.1.7 Allow Submission After Due Date
Toggle Yes to reveal an Enter Extra Days field, where you specify how many days beyond the end date students can still submit.
13.1.8 Choice of Email Notifications
Decide whether students receive email notifications about assignment creation, updates, or changes.
13.1.9 Add Questions
Include specific questions in the assignment. Toggling Yes reveals an Add Questions button; each question has a Remove button for editing. Up to 5 questions can be added.
13.1.10 Exclude Phrases
Toggle Yes to open a box for up to 15 phrases, each up to 200 characters. Phrases are excluded from the similarity check, useful for excluding common or technical terminology.
13.1.11 Viewing of Similarity % and Report
When enabled, students can view the similarity percentage and detailed plagiarism report once the assignment has been processed.
Daily Submission Limit: enter a number to define how many times a student can submit the assignment per day.
13.2 Compare Against Databases
At least one comparison option must be selected for the assignment to be created:
- 13.2.1 Student Papers – compare against other student papers submitted to DrillBit.
- 13.2.2 Journals & Publishers – compare against academic journals and publications.
- 13.2.3 Internet or Web – compare against content from websites, blogs, and articles available online.
- 13.2.4 Institution Repository – compare against your institution's repository of previous submissions.
Finalizing the Assignment
Review all the details for accuracy. When you're satisfied, click Create Assignment to save and publish the task. The assignment will become available to students based on the start and end dates you set.
