Guides LMS Integration Brightspace Step 3 — Deploy & use the tool in courses

Step 3 — Deploy & use the tool in courses LMS

The final step is back inside Brightspace. You’ll create a deployment of the registered tool, scope it to the org units (courses) where it should be available, generate a Deep Linking Quicklink, then attach it to a course’s Content area as an activity so students and instructors can launch DrillBit from inside the course.

Before you start: complete Step 1 and Step 2. The Brightspace registration and DrillBit-side configuration must both be in place before a deployment can be created.

1. Open the registered tool

  1. Back in Brightspace, go to Admin Tools › Manage Extensibility › LTI Advantage.
  2. Click the tool you registered in Step 1 (for example, Drillbit Plagiarism Tool).
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the Tool Details panel and click View Deployments.

2. Create a new deployment

On the deployments page:

  1. Click New Deployment.
  2. Make sure Enabled and Auto Migrate Links are on.
  3. Under Tool, select the tool you registered (e.g. Drillbit Plagiarism Tool).
  4. Give the deployment a Name (for example, Drillbit) and a short Description such as plagiarism checking tool.

3. Security and configuration settings

Under Security Settings — Select the information to share with the tool, tick:

Under Configuration Settings, tick:

Leave Auto Create Grade Items unticked unless you specifically want every link to create its own grade item.

4. Choose the org units (courses)

  1. Under Make tool available to, click Add Org Units.
  2. Use the Filter by Org Unit Type drop-down and the search box to find the courses (or the whole organisation) where DrillBit should be usable.
  3. Tick each org unit you want to add, then close the picker.
  4. Click Create Deployment.

5. Create the link

The deployment makes DrillBit available to the selected org units; the link is what instructors actually attach to course content.

  1. From the deployment you just created, click View Links.
  2. Click New Link.
  3. Make sure Enabled is on, then fill in the fields:
NameDrillBit Plagiarism Check
URLhttps://lti.drillbitplagiarismcheck.com/lti/launch
DescriptionDrillBit Plagiarism Check
TypeDeep Linking Quicklink
Width800
Height600

Click Save and Close.

The Type must be Deep Linking Quicklink. If it’s left as the default link type, instructors won’t be able to pick DrillBit from the Existing Activities drop-down when adding it to a course module.

6. Add DrillBit to a course module

Now switch from the admin area into one of the courses you added in step 4:

  1. Open the course and click Content in the top navigation.
  2. Pick the module you want DrillBit to live in (or create a new one).
  3. Open the Existing Activities drop-down on the module page.
  4. Choose the link you created in step 5 (it will appear with the name you set, e.g. DrillBit Plagiarism Check).

7. Configure the assignment

A small Add Activity › Create Assignment dialog opens. Fill in:

Click Submit. The tool link appears in the module with an External Learning Tool badge and the start / end / due dates you set.

8. Launch the tool

Click the tool link inside the module to launch DrillBit. If everything is wired up correctly, you’ll see the DrillBit Plagiarism Tool dashboard inside Brightspace, showing:

Integration complete. Instructors can now add DrillBit to any module in the org units you deployed it to, and launches will land directly inside the DrillBit dashboard.
