Step 3 — Deploy & use the tool in courses LMS
The final step is back inside Brightspace. You’ll create a deployment of the registered tool, scope it to the org units (courses) where it should be available, generate a Deep Linking Quicklink, then attach it to a course’s Content area as an activity so students and instructors can launch DrillBit from inside the course.
1. Open the registered tool
- Back in Brightspace, go to Admin Tools › Manage Extensibility › LTI Advantage.
- Click the tool you registered in Step 1 (for example, Drillbit Plagiarism Tool).
- Scroll to the bottom of the Tool Details panel and click View Deployments.
2. Create a new deployment
On the deployments page:
- Click New Deployment.
- Make sure Enabled and Auto Migrate Links are on.
- Under Tool, select the tool you registered (e.g. Drillbit Plagiarism Tool).
- Give the deployment a Name (for example,
Drillbit) and a short Description such as plagiarism checking tool.
3. Security and configuration settings
Under Security Settings — Select the information to share with the tool, tick:
- Org Unit Information
- User Information — including Name (First / Middle / Last), Email, User ID, Username, and Org Defined Id
- Link Information — Title and Description
- Classlist including users not known to this deployment
Under Configuration Settings, tick:
- Open as External Resource
- Grades created by LTI will be included in Final Grade
Leave Auto Create Grade Items unticked unless you specifically want every link to create its own grade item.
4. Choose the org units (courses)
- Under Make tool available to, click Add Org Units.
- Use the Filter by Org Unit Type drop-down and the search box to find the courses (or the whole organisation) where DrillBit should be usable.
- Tick each org unit you want to add, then close the picker.
- Click Create Deployment.
5. Create the link
The deployment makes DrillBit available to the selected org units; the link is what instructors actually attach to course content.
- From the deployment you just created, click View Links.
- Click New Link.
- Make sure Enabled is on, then fill in the fields:
| Name | DrillBit Plagiarism Check |
|---|---|
| URL | https://lti.drillbitplagiarismcheck.com/lti/launch |
| Description | DrillBit Plagiarism Check |
| Type | Deep Linking Quicklink |
| Width | 800 |
| Height | 600 |
Click Save and Close.
6. Add DrillBit to a course module
Now switch from the admin area into one of the courses you added in step 4:
- Open the course and click Content in the top navigation.
- Pick the module you want DrillBit to live in (or create a new one).
- Open the Existing Activities drop-down on the module page.
- Choose the link you created in step 5 (it will appear with the name you set, e.g. DrillBit Plagiarism Check).
7. Configure the assignment
A small Add Activity › Create Assignment dialog opens. Fill in:
- Assignment Title – the title students see in DrillBit.
- Assignment Desc – a short description.
- Start Date – when submissions open.
- End Date – when submissions close.
- Due Date – the deadline shown to students.
Click Submit. The tool link appears in the module with an External Learning Tool badge and the start / end / due dates you set.
8. Launch the tool
Click the tool link inside the module to launch DrillBit. If everything is wired up correctly, you’ll see the DrillBit Plagiarism Tool dashboard inside Brightspace, showing:
- The current course and assignment name.
- A submission count for the assignment.
- Recent submissions, the submission overview chart, and trend analysis.
- The standard left-hand DrillBit sidebar — Dashboard, Submissions, Repository Inbox, Reports, and Settings.
Troubleshooting
- Tool launches but shows an authentication error – the most common cause is a mismatched Platform URL or Client Id in DrillBit. Re-check the values entered in Step 2 against the Brightspace Tool Details page.
- Link doesn’t appear under Existing Activities – the link’s Type isn’t Deep Linking Quicklink, or the deployment doesn’t include the course’s org unit. Edit the link / deployment from Manage Extensibility.
- Launch returns “Tool not deployed” – the course’s org unit isn’t in the deployment’s Make tool available to list. Add it via View Deployments › Edit › Add Org Units.
