Guides LMS Integration Canvas Step 3 — Install the DrillBit app in Canvas

Step 3 — Install the DrillBit app in Canvas LMS

Registering the developer key only creates the configuration — instructors can’t pick DrillBit as a submission type until the app is installed. In this step you’ll install DrillBit once at the site level so it’s available across Canvas, then repeat the same install inside every course that needs it.

Before you start: complete Step 1 and Step 2. You’ll need the same Client ID you copied from the Canvas developer key.

1. Open Site Admin settings

  1. Click the Admin option on the side bar.
  2. Choose Site Admin.
  3. From the admin menu, go to Settings.
  4. Switch to the Apps menu in the horizontal tab bar.

2. Add DrillBit as a new app

  1. Click the + App button.
  2. For Configuration Type, choose By Client ID.
  3. Paste the Client ID you copied from Step 9 of the Canvas developer key setup.
  4. Click Submit and follow the prompts to finish installing the application.
If Canvas reports that the tool is not found, double-check that the developer key is in the ON state. A key left as OFF after Step 1 will not resolve when looking it up by Client ID.

3. Install DrillBit inside each course

The same install procedure has to be carried out in every course where DrillBit should be available:

  1. Open the course where you want to enable DrillBit.
  2. Go to the course’s Settings › Apps.
  3. Click + App, choose By Client ID, paste the same Client ID, and submit.

Once a course has the app installed, instructors enrolled in that course can pick the DrillBit tool when creating assignments — that’s the next step.

The app is installed. Continue to Step 4 — Use DrillBit in Canvas assignments to attach DrillBit to an assignment and launch the tool.
