Guides LMS Integration Canvas Step 4 — Use DrillBit in Canvas assignments

Step 4 — Use DrillBit in Canvas assignments LMS

With the developer key live, DrillBit wired up, and the app installed inside the course, instructors can now attach DrillBit to any assignment. This page covers the day-to-day workflow: creating an assignment, picking DrillBit as the submission type, launching the tool, and having students upload through it.

Before you start: make sure Step 3 has been completed for the specific course you’re working in — without a per-course install, DrillBit will not appear in the Submission Type list.

1. Create a new assignment

  1. Open the course where DrillBit is installed.
  2. From the course menu, click Assignments.
  3. Click the + Assignment button.
  4. Fill in the assignment details (title, instructions, points, due date, etc.) according to your need.
Assignments must be created by a Teacher or Instructor enrolled in the course. Student or observer roles cannot pick DrillBit as a submission type.

2. Choose DrillBit as the submission type

  1. Scroll down to the Submission Type section.
  2. Open the dropdown and select DrillBit Tool.
  3. Save the assignment.

Canvas will now route every submission for this assignment through the DrillBit LTI launch you configured in Step 1.

3. Launch the tool

  1. From the Assignments page, click on the assignment you just created.
  2. Click Load DrillBit tool in new window to launch DrillBit in a separate browser window.

The new window opens DrillBit in instructor mode, scoped to this specific assignment. From here you can configure submission settings, view uploaded documents, and review similarity reports.

4. Student submissions

Enrolled students see the same assignment in their course view. To submit:

  1. The student opens the assignment from the course.
  2. They launch the DrillBit tool from the assignment page.
  3. Inside DrillBit, they upload their document the same way they would in DrillBit’s standalone interface.

Each upload is associated with the student’s Canvas identity, and similarity results flow back to the Canvas gradebook through the LTI Advantage services you enabled in Step 1.

That’s the full Canvas LTI External Tool flow. Thank you for choosing the DrillBit tool — if anything in this guide doesn’t match what you see in Canvas, contact DrillBit support for assistance.
